This has been a great series and shows the response to the attempted assassination of Russian double-agent, Sergei Skripal, by the use of Novichok nerve agent in the quiet, West Country city.  The programme has highlighted the great efforts by the police and County Council to deal with this crisis.  BUT, were you aware that the CCTV investigation and viewing of over 5000 hours of footage was conducted by two Metropolitan Police Super Recognisers?   It was these two SRs who matched the men landing at Gatwick airport and then arriving at Salisbury railway station and walking around in the town.   Super Recognisers solve another major crime!

The Continuing Need for Human Intervention

The high profile deployment of automated facial recognition AFR) by the Metropolitan Police continues to attract lots of criticism, whilst generating few results.  This article relates to the use of AFR in the busy shopping area of Oxford Street in central London.  Despite over 8000 faces being scanned, only one criminal was successfully identified and arrested.  For law enforcement agencies across the world it is important to note the advice of the US NIST (National Institute for Science & Technology) that noted that the best results are achieved if AFR is used with HUMAN super recognisers.

The Impact of the Pandemic - Masks!

The Metropolitan Police are said to be re-considering their decision to deployed automated facial recognition (AFR) - see article.  This is due to large numbers of people now wearing face masks to protect themselves from the Covid 19 virus...……..or to hide their faces from the police as they are prolific, violent or wanted criminals.  Human Super Recognisers have made identifications where the suspect has covered much of their face - as can be seen in the photograph.  This was suspect was identified by a police officer Super Recogniser in the aftermath of the London Riots of 2011.  He received six years imprisonment for robbery.

It is time for more law enforcement agencies to find and use their Super Recognisers.

We live in frightening times and the Covid 19 has shut down most of the world.   At present, we are dealing with the first wave of the pandemic, but what if, like the Spanish 'flu, there is a second or third wave?   By that time the authorities may have identified Super Spreaders, who need to be isolated.  Many will be responsible, but others may take to the streets and continue to pass on the virus.  The attached articles contains concerns about using automated facial recognition to find them, but could Super Recognisers provide a better and more ethical solution?   Perhaps you have thought of ways that Super Recognisers could assist in the current crisis - please contact the Association with your ideas.   If viable, your ideas can be passed on to government agencies, with your work acknowledged and rewarded.

The Untold Truth About the Escape From Alcatraz

In 1962, three men, Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, made a daring and well planned escape from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.   The maximum security jail was located on an island in San Francisco Bay and housed some of America's most infamous criminals.  According to the official FBI report, the men died in the attempt to flee the maximum security prison, most likely drowning before reaching mainland California.   But did the authorities cover up the truth, as they wanted the public (and criminals) to believe that no one could escape from Alcatraz? You can also see how they escaped in the Clint Eastwood film Escape from Alcatraz.

At 10 mins 45 secs - 56 secs - allegedly photographs of John and Clarence Anglin (wearing sun glasses) taken in Brazil in 1975, thirteen years after the escape.   Their prison mugshots are shown alongside.   What is your view?  Are they the same men??   Did the escapees make it to the mainland?

Covid-19 Virus

This is a difficult time for many and our chairman, Lord Lingfield, hopes that all members of the Association and their families get through this period.   Many of the events where Super Recognisers were to be deployed are either cancelled or under threat - this includes Premier League football matches, horse show events and Wimbledon Tennis.   Please continue to push your local police forces to use Super Recognisers and once this current threat has been removed from our lives, we can continue to promote the use of SRs throughout the world.
