Cambridgeshire Police – New Super Recogniser Team!

Cambridgeshire Police now have a team of qualified human Super Recognisers, trained in the law and regulations relating to surveillance, identification and data protection and verified as having the Super Recogniser skill (a superior natural ability to recognise faces) by Professor Josh Davis and his team from the University of Greenwich.

Following extensive testing, the top nine officers and staff members successfully completed the four-day course at the force headquarters in Huntingdon.   They will now to be used to increase identifications and detections from CCTV and other images, spot offenders during proactive operations and verify automated facial recognition idents (the latter having a legal requirement for “human intervention”).

A more effective and systematic use of images of suspects, with Super Recognisers as part of the process, is a very cost-effective method of improving detections.  It should be noted that, in the UK, two-thirds of police forces are graded as “requiring improvement” or “inadequate” in relation to the investigation of crime and service given to victims.
